An ideal diamond is one, which reflects all the light that enters through its table facet. However, the imperfect cut of the stone may cause the leakage of light through the sides or bottom of the stone. There is one another effect seen on the fancy color diamonds because of the cut imperfection. The oval cut, pear cut, and marquise diamonds are usually prone to exhibit this defect. It is called the bow-tie effect and can affect the entire value of the diamond depending on the degree of the defect.
What is Meant by Bow-Tie Effect?
The darkened area that can be seen across the width of a diamond’s body is called as the bow-tie in a diamond. This resembles the bowtie of a man and hence the name bow-tie effect. It is the cut quality of the diamond, which determines the degree of the bow-tie effect. If there are diamond facets that do not reflect light properly, there is a high chance for the bow-tie effect to be revealed.
However, it must be noted that the bow-tie effect is not caused because of the leakage of light entering the diamond. Rather, it is because of the light obstruction that happens when you view the diamond. It might sound a little strange that the obstruction causes the bow tie effect. However, the fact is that when your head obstructs the light rays coming to the stone, dark shadows are created and they are reflected within the stone.
Correcting The Bow-Tie Effect
It is possible to correct the bow-tie effect in diamonds by making some appropriate cuts. Nevertheless, this is a very difficult task and should be done by experts. Otherwise, it can affect the whole structure of the stone. Many things must be considered while the correction is made. The diamond cutters will consider the profitability of the stone while they make the cuts. Sometimes they may do it at the price of losing ideal proportions of the diamond facets.
The bow tie effect may not be bad always. Some marquise and oval cut diamonds get their brightness because of the bow-tie effect, which would otherwise look dull. However, you should be careful to avoid buying the diamonds, which has a wide bow-tie effect. The diamond report does not mention the bow tie effect. Hence, you need to be careful when you buy your fancy cut diamond.
The best thing is to verify the diamond with your own eyes before you make the purchase.
